Beetles baseball: Alexandria starts slow in second half

Alexandria fell into last place in the second half of the Northwoods League North Division standings after going 1-3 through their first four games of the second half schedule.

Alexandria will host Duluth tonight (Wednesday) and tomorrow night before heading to Duluth for a pair of games Friday and Saturday.

Alexandria could only collect four hits off Thunder Bay's pitching staff as Alexandria fell 7-2 to the Border Cats.

The Beetles picked up one run in the fourth as Tanner Vavra scored on a delayed steal at home, and added their only other run in the ninth as Jimmy Pickens and Matt Beaty hit back-to-back doubles.

Scott Sanderson took the loss, giving up seven runs in six innings.

It was a back-and-forth game between the Beetles and the Border Cats as the lead switched four times before Alexandria emerged a winner as Vavra stroked a two-out double in the seventh to drive in Josh Guerra.

Ben Moore hit a go-ahead run on a homer in the top of the fifth to give Alexandria a lead, but saw that lead disappear on a home run by James Bonds.

Moore led the Beetles with two hits to drive in three runs, including his home run.

Alex Guilford grabbed the win in relief of Steve Weber, keeping the Border Cats hitless.

For the second game in a row, St. Cloud defeated Alexandria by a 9-8 score as Erik Kozel poked a walk-off single and went 4-for-4 on the night.

It was the eighth inning that finished off the Beetles, who were 8-2 heading to the bottom of the stanza as St. Cloud used three walks, three hits and a hit-by-pitch to bring in five runs and tie the game.

Both teams saw the ball well, blasting a total of 26 hits between the two squads and scoring 17 runs.

Michael Reed took the loss, his third of the year, going one and a third innings and allowing one run.

Thursday's contest with the St. Cloud Rox was a battle of the bats as the two teams tallied 24 hits in the 10-inning game.

Ryan Padilla paced the offensive effort for the Beetles as he knocked up a pair of runs, including a double and a home run to drive in a pair. His solo homer came in the bottom of the seventh to start a four-run inning for the Beetles.

Matt Lowenstein, Ben Moore and Josh Carpenter all had two hits each.

Alex Guilford was tagged with the loss in relief, pitching two innings and allowing one run.

A pair of home runs by Ben Moore took center stage in Alexandria's one-run victory over Willmar on the 4th of July, with Alexandria taking the lead for good in the eighth behind a pair of runs.

Moore's first homer came in the bottom of the first to drive in a pair of runs, then added another two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.

Padilla also had a homer in the win, that coming in the bottom of the fifth to bring in three.

The Stingers came back with a run in the eighth on an error, but couldn't advance any further.

Mitchell Babb grabbed the win, allowing just one hit in three innings of work, walked just two and not allowing a run.

A four-run seventh inning for the Stingers broke open Tuesday's game and gave Willmar a 12-6 victory.

Nine lead changes highlighted the battle before Dillon Haupt scored in the seventh to give Willmar the lead for good.

Pickens led the way for Alexandria's offense as he went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and one more driven in.

Nick Berhel took the pitching loss in relief as he pitched just one-third of an inning, walking one and allowing four runs. This was just his first loss of the season.
