Beetles baseball: Alexandria drops pair

The Alexandria Beetles closed out their road trip with a pair of losses, coming back to the confines of Knute Nelson Memorial Park with a 5-6 record.

Alexandria didn't make any headway in the North Division standings, remaining in sixth with a 7-13 record. Mankato, which heads to Alexandria for games today and tomorrow, leads the division with a 16-5 mark.

Waterloo 10, Beetles 4

After spotting Waterloo six runs in the first two innings, Alexandria put its first run on the board in the top of the third as Will Fulmer knocked out a triple, then scored on an RBI single from Tanner Vavra.

Unfortunately, the Beetles' pitching staff gave up four more runs in the seventh, allowing the Bucks a 10-1 lead and leaving Alexandria far short, despite a three-run ninth.

Johnny Tolson started the ninth with a walk and advanced to third on a double by Ryan Padilla, finally scoring on an out at first by Ben Moore.

Josh Guerra then rapped a two-run homer to give the Beetles their third and fourth runs of the game.

In all, Fullmer, Vavra, Moore and Josh Carpenter each had two hits.

Michael Reed took the pitching loss as he gave up six earned runs on nine hits and five walks in four and two-thirds innings. Matthew Dietman entered for two and a third frames, giving up four more earned runs on six hits and two walks. Caleb DeLee finished up the eighth by striking out one.

Rochester 10, Beetles 4

Once again, the Beetles allowed their opponents to get the jump on them, giving up seven runs before putting their own mark on the board as they fell to the Honkers 10-4 in their final contest of an 11-game road trip.

Steve Weber was stuck with seven of those runs as he was tagged with the loss as he went five innings, allowing eight hits and one walk, striking out three.

Rene Martinez relieved Weber for two and a third frames, allowing one run on three hits and three walks, striking out two. Mitchell Babb closed out the game, going two-thirds of an inning, allowing just one walk and striking out one.

Ryan Padilla put his team on the board in the sixth as he pounded a three-run homer, bringing in Fulmer and Moore, who reached base on a single and a walk, respectively.

Padilla drove in a pair of runs in the eighth as his double sent Jimmy Pickens and Moore home.

Alexandria's final run was accounted for in the ninth as Vavra, who singled, scored on an error by the catcher.

Pickens went 3-for-5 at the plate, scoring once, while Padilla was 3-for-4 with five runs driven in.
