Whitecaps baseball: Carlos third in State Class A Senior baseball tournament

Hauling home hardware from state tournaments seems to be a theme for the Carlos Whitecaps senior baseball team.

Last year's inaugural season brought the Class C championship trophy for Carlos and in their second season of existence, the Whitecaps have added to the trophy case with a third place finish in the Class A tournament.

The Perham Silver Pirates, a team that shared the Northwest League title with the Whitecaps, decisively captured the Class A title with an 11-5 win in the championship game.

"All the Carlos Whitecaps players and families want to give a deep congratulations to the Perham Silver Pirates for winning the Class A state championship," said Whitecaps manager Troy Olson.

Both the Whitecaps and the Silver Pirates finished the season with 11-4 records, with Perham winning the head-to-head competition two games to one.

An early 1-0 lead for the Whitecaps didn't hold up as the Braemer Bees scored three runs in the top of the third - more than enough to upend Carlos.

Left fielder Brad Anderson scored the only run of the second inning for the Whitecaps as he singled, then advanced to third on a sacrifice by shortstop Kyle Berberich, who moved to third when Braemer left the bag uncovered.

A sacrifice fly by first baseman Greg Nathe drove in Anderson.

"The story of the game was the Braemer pitcher, Gary Fritch," said Olson. "The 56-year-old veteran struck out 10 Whitecap batters, mixing in a low 80 mph fastball and a late-breaking curveball that overpowered the Carlos hitters, even though we outhit Braemer 7-4.

"Fritch was the best hurler we faced all year by far. With that said, we kicked the ball around and gave the Bees three runs with three errors and two leadoff walks that scored.

"We had our chances, but some of the Whitecaps were just overmatched at the plate," he said.

Greg Endres, Carlos' second baseman, and Vince Palyan, centerfielder, both had a pair of hits in the game, with John Toop driving in an RBI.

Mark Illies took the loss on the mound as he went the distance, giving up all four runs on four hits, walking three and striking out two.

It was a battle between familiar foes for the third place trophy as the Whitecaps took on Northwest League rival Menahga-Sebeka.

A small hiccup allowed the Relics to score one run in the top of the second inning, but Carlos came back with three big runs in the bottom of the frame for a 3-1 lead.

"Carlos started the big man, Brian 'Smoke' Jacobson, on the bump and he pitched like he has all year, consistent," said Olson. "Smoke picked up his team-leading sixth win for the Whitecaps with an impressive one earned run in five innings."

Rob Nigg pitched the sixth with Palyan cleaning up for the save in the seventh.

Endres, starting as designated hitter, once again led the way at the plate with three hits, while right fielder Olson and second baseman Brad Eustice added two hits each.

"The entire team got to play and it was a fun game with friendly banter between both teams, since we know each other very well," commented Olson. "But both teams wanted that third place hardware and Carlos was pleased to come home with it."

All friends and fans of the Carlos Whitecaps are welcome to come and celebrate with the team at their end of the season get together at Herby's in Carlos tonight, Friday at 7 p.m.
