Executive Men's Division: Freeman makes himself at home for title

Echo Press photo by Al Edenloff Jon Freeman of Chanhassen claimed the Executive Men's Division title with a 6-5 win over Alexandria's Dave Dilley.

Because his family had a lake home on Lake Darling, Jon Freeman of Chanhassen spent the summers of his youth growing up in Alexandria.

And that meant spending a lot of time on the Alexandria Golf Course.

All that experience paid off on Saturday when the 47-year-old finance director won his first Resorters title - the 2010 Executive Men's Championship.

Freeman knocked off Alexandria's Dave Dilley 6-5, avenging his 19-hole loss in the division final last year to his brother, Stefan Freeman of St. Cloud.

"I played solid," said Freeman after his big win. "I didn't give him [Dilley] much room."

Freeman, who earlier that morning defeated Steve Tax of Sartell 5-4 in the semifinals, jumped out to an early lead against Dilley, winning two of the first three holes.

Going into No. 7, Freeman was 3-up. He appeared in danger of losing the "Minnesota Green" when his drive ended up on the cart path, but after a free drop, he made a nifty chip onto the green to save par, halve the hole and remain 3-up.

Dilley came close to slicing into the lead on the next hole when he just missed a birdie putt and had to settle for a gimme par.

On No. 9, Dilley's tricky downhill putt rolled way beyond the cup and he dropped four back.

Freeman kept his hot streak going with another win on No. 10 to go 5-up.

After halving No. 11, Freeman found himself in the No. 12 bunker but he made a nice out to halve the hole and keep his lead at five.

Dilley wound up in the sand on No. 13 and Freeman took advantage to win the hole and the match.

At the awards ceremony, Freeman said that winning the Resorters was special because when he was growing up the tournament was the "biggest thing in the world."

He added that he'd be back next year to defend his title and, perhaps, add another Resorters trophy to the Freeman family's collection.
