"Great Alexandria Bike Race" set for Saturday and Sunday

The Alexandria Bike and Ski Club is getting ready to host the "Great Alexandria Bike Race" on June 20-21.

Both citizens and USA Cycling (USAC) licensed bikers will get a chance to race the same 36-mile long course.

The two-day event begins with a road race on Saturday, which starts and ends at Alexandria Extrusion. Sunday will feature a morning time trial and an afternoon circuit race starting in Forada.

Registration and packet pick-up for non-USAC riders begins at Big Ole Park at 207 Irving Street at 8 a.m. and closes at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. The race then begins at 10 a.m. with a course that consists of 10 miles out, a 16-mile loop and a 10-mile return to town.

Trophies will be awarded to the top finishing male and female. Medals are handed out to the top three in all 13 age groups by gender. Age groups for the event are 15 and under, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and 70 and older.

Entry fees for non-USAC riders in the road race are $30 for adults and $15 for those 18 and younger.

Registration for USAC riders begins at 10 a.m. on June 20 at Big Ole Park and runs through 11:30 a.m. The first field of USAC stage racers leaves at noon.

A dinner and awards presentation at the Holiday Inn follows the races on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The time trial on Sunday begins with an 8 a.m. sign-up and registration period at the Forada Supper Club at 13804 4th Street SE. The time trial is an eight-mile out and back on County Road 4. The first rider is scheduled to leave around 9:30 a.m.

USAC racers will also register for the individual time trial in front of the Forada Supper Club at 8 a.m. Start times will be determined by place in field standings. Riders will leave in 30-second intervals.
