Redbird tennis team sweeps through own invitational

The Cardinal tennis team swept through the competition at its home invite this past Saturday.

Alexandria picked up three wins on the day, defeating Robinsdale-Armstrong 4-3 in the final match of the day. The Cardinals took down Litchfield 6-1 in the second round after beating north subsection rival Moorhead in the opener 7-0.

"We knew it was going to be a special day after a great win like that," head coach Dave Ronning said.

The Alexandria doubles lineup led the team to victory over Robinsdale-Armstrong. The Cardinals swept all three positions in straight sets. Cody Nelson and Thomas Williams teamed up in a tight battle at No. 3 doubles that saw them prevail 7-5, 6-4.

Luke Eberly picked up a win at No. 1 singles against Litchfield. The Cardinals moved players around in their lineup against the Dragons. Jacob Otterness, Kevin Desautels and Matt Peterson joined Eberly in the singles lineup, while Reggie Ronning and Connor Illies teamed up at first doubles.

The moves worked out well as the Cardinals swept the doubles lineup and picked up three straight-set victories in singles.

"In the second match, we threw our lineup all over the place and the guys responded well to the changes, getting the 6-1 win," Ronning said.

Reggie Ronning was at his No. 1 singles spot in the opener against Moorhead where he picked up an impressive win over Tyler Hjolmquist. Hjolmquist was a state participant last season but Ronning picked up a 7-6 (5) win in the first set to take an early advantage. Hjolmquist had to default in the second set.

The Cardinals moved to 13-3 overall with the three wins. They are 5-2 in the Central Lakes Conference.

"It was a good day after a tough week in the CLC and a good way to start the rest of the season as the guys are committed to going out with a bang," Ronning said. "Our destiny is in our hands, and we feel we have as good a shot at going all the way through the section as anyone."
