Blizzard lose series against Granite City

The Alexandria Blizzard saw its season come to an end on Sunday night as Granite City defended its home ice to win 4-2 and win the best-of-three series 2-1.

The Lumberjacks lost game one of the series 4-1 but rebounded for a 3-2 win in Alexandria before securing the series on Sunday.

The Blizzard couldn’t stay out of the penalty box in game three. Granite City had nine power-play opportunities, compared to four for Alexandria. That proved to be the difference in the game as the Lumberjacks converted on three of those.

Drew Otto had a big game with two goals in the first period. Alexandria responded to that 2-0 deficit with goals from Mick Dhein and Tom Schmidt on the power play. The two teams went into the first intermission tied at two apiece, but the Lumberjacks got power play goals from Taylor Brown and David Kenney in the second period.

That proved to be enough to advance to the West Division finals against North Iowa. Evan Bisek took the loss in net for the Blizzard after accumulating 28 saves on 32 shots faced. Granite City’s Scott Murray got the win with 26 saves on 28 shots faced.

The Blizzard finished the year 32-19 overall.
