Boys basketball: Osakis still going after fending off Warroad
The Osakis boys basketball is one of the four teams left standing in the Section 8, Class AA field.
The Silverstreaks (22-6) used their defense to fend off seventh-seeded Warroad (13-14) in the quarterfinals at Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday. It was a 16-16 game at the half, but Osakis got going more in the second half to lead to a 50-39 win.
"In games like this, if the first few shots don't fall through the basket, guys will tense up and stop being aggressive on offense and not take what the defense gives you," Osakis head coach Matt Hoelscher said. "We missed some bunnies and threes, which are shots we usually make, but give credit to Warroad's defense for making us play hesitant."
Hoelscher credited junior guard Jonathan Lara with providing a spark in the second half.
"He came in and got a steal, and offensive board and floater when we needed it and Josh (Peterka) rebounded extremely well," Hoelscher said.
Peterka had a team-high 12 rebounds, while sophomore guard Daniel Savageau had 15 points and nine boards. Reid DeWenter finished with 11 points and all three of Osakis' triples. Sophomore forward Kobie Lara had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
"It was an ugly win, but that's kind of what we've been doing all year is finding ways to win when we don't play at our best," Hoelscher said. "All those overtime games and barely beating teams we were more skilled than prepared us for this. Guys played with poise, and we were able to get stops and make a few free throws to stretch it out."
Now Osakis, seeded third in the South half of 8-AA, gets the South's top-seeded Perham Yellowjackets.
Perham is 28-0 and the third-ranked team in the Minnesota Basketball News March 7 Class AA rankings. The two teams will play at 6 p.m. on Monday at Moorhead High School.
Hawley (15-11) and Breckenridge (23-5) are the other two teams left standing on the bottom half of the bracket.
