Junior legion baseball: Reds split with Fergus Falls

The Alexandria Reds junior legion baseball team split a doubleheader with Fergus Falls on Tuesday night after losing 5-1 in the nightcap and winning the opener 5-3.

Fergus Falls scored two in the first inning of game two and added two more in the fifth to add some insurance. Alexandria got seven hits in the game, one each from Taylor Moritz, Tyler Petron, Cole Walters (2B), Devan Swerman, Sam Boettner, Shane Kelley and Aiden Kluver.

The Reds (9-16) trailed 3-0 through three innings in the opener, but scored four in the fourth and one more in the fifth to gain a lead they never gave back. Shay Endres, Elijah Holthaus and Caleb Wendel all doubled in the game. Endres, Riley Carlsen and Boettner had an RBI apiece.

Peyton Doty got the win on the mound by going six innings. He allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits and five walks. Doty struck out seven before Moritz worked a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the save.

District tournament coming to Alexandria

Tuesday's split with Fergus Falls was a prelude to Alexandria hosting its junior legion district tournament this summer.

The tournament is scheduled to run next week, July 16-19, at Knute Nelson Ballpark. Game times will be posted online at www.echopress.com when they become available.
