State baseball: Alexandria, Parkers Prairie both seeded heading into Thursday quarterfinals

The Alexandria baseball team will get a third shot at Willmar. This time with more on the line.

The two Central Lakes Conference rivals both made the Class AAA state tournament and will match up in the first round at Siebert Field on the University of Minnesota campus. Game time is set for Thursday at 12:30 p.m.

Willmar (13-6), seeded fifth at state, won the Section 6AAA Tournament with four straight victories, including a 3-2 decision against Benilde-St. Margaret’s (15-8) in the title game. Alexandria (15-6), seeded fourth, won Section 8AAA with a win over Fergus Falls and two straight against Little Falls. Alexandria beat Willmar 3-0 in the season opener and again in a 6-4 game on May 10.

The winner of the Willmar versus Alexandria game will play the winner of Grand Rapids (10-15) and top-seeded Mahtomedi (18-4) on June 15 at noon back at Siebert Field. The loser of the quarterfinals game will drop to the consolation bracket and play at the University of Northwestern at noon on June 15.

Parkers Prairie seeded fifth

The defending Class A state champions were seeded fifth in the state tournament.

The Panthers (18-9) will take on fourth-seeded Wabasso (14-4) at 12:30 on Thursday afternoon at the Chaska Athletic Park. The winner will take on the winner of Sacred Heart (15-5) and top-seeded Heritage Christian Academy (20-3) at noon on June 15 back in Chaska.

The Panthers won their third straight Section 6A title this season and came through the loser’s bracket to do it. They won three games decided by a total of four runs against Border West, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and New York Mills before dominating top-seeded New York Mills (19-5) in a 14-2 win in six innings during the championship game.

Wabasso cruised through Section 3A. The Rabbits won five games in the section tournament by a combined score of 37-7.
