Baseball: B-E sweeps Hillcrest

The Brandon-Evansville baseball team hosted Hillcrest Lutheran Academy on Monday night for a Section 6A and Pheasant Conference doubleheader.

The Chargers won both games by double figures to up their record to 9-5 overall.

B-E's first opportunity at bat in the bottom of the first inning of game one sent 14 batters to plate. Doubles by Nick Thorstad, Taylor Bitzan and Jake Hintermeister helped get 11 runners in as the Chargers cruised to a 14-4 win.

The Chargers broke the second game open with nine runs in the third inning and another four in the fourth inning. They took the second game, 16-1.

"It was great to see the bats get going," B-E head coach Brian Perleberg said. "Several guys were putting good swings on the ball and we were able to stay disciplined and not swing at pitches out of the zone."

Marshall Riedel went 2-for-4 in the first game, getting three runs and two RBIs. Gaven Jacobson was 2-for-2 and Bitzan was 2-for-3.

Corbin Olson went 2-for-4 in the second game for B-E with four RBIs. Bitzan was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Alek Pikkaraine was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Brandon Merritt started on the mound in the first game and Thorstad and Riedel pitched in relief.

"The Chargers pitching staff settled in after the rough start and was able to quiet the Hillcrest bats, not allowing another earned run the rest of the game," Perleberg said. "Taylor Bitzan and Jake Hintermeister combined to give us five quality innings on the mound (in game two) and the offense came up with some key hits when we needed them."

The Chargers are now 7-4 in the conference and section. They head to Hancock (8-9) on Thursday night for a section game starting at 5 p.m.
