Ashby-Brandon-Evansville Legion sweeps WCA

The Ashby-Brandon-Evansville Legion baseball team swept a doubleheader against West Central Area on Tuesday night as the bats broke out for a total of 19 runs.

A-B-E won 14-2 in six innings in the nightcap after Tom Bosek gave his team a strong start in a 5-1 win in the opener. Jake Nohre had a big game at the plate in game two with three hits, including a triple, to go along with four RBIs and two runs scored.

The offense got contributions from up and down the lineup as eight different players had at least one hit. Zach Johnson had a single and a double with three RBIs and two runs scored. Craig Campbell also went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.

“The second game of the double header was a lot of fun for the guys,” coach Trent Hintermeister said. “Everyone seemed to bust out of the hitting slump we had been in…This pair of wins was big for us. We needed to get into a rhythm offensively. It took our two 9th graders, Kevin Campbell and Jake Nohre, to light a fire for the rest of the guys. Kevin and Jake are two talented young players. It was fun to see them lead the offense for us tonight. Along with those two boys, Craig Campbell hit the ball very well.”

Christianson got the win in the nightcap by limiting WCA to just two unearned runs.

“He was in command of his pitches all night and had the WCA batters guessing,” Hintermeister said. “Both runs for the WCA Ducks were unearned. We had a few errors early in the game that gave WCA a pair of runs. We need to clean that up before the playoffs start.”

Bosek was in complete command in the 5-1 win in the opener. The soon-to-be senior fanned 10 guys and scattered just five hits in allowing the one earned run.

“Tom was on top of his game and our defense played well behind him,” Hintermeister said. “Offensively we were only able to get five runs on the board, but it was nice to see us hitting the ball a little better than we had been up to this point in the season.”

Kevin Campbell led off in both games and went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the opener. Craig Campbell had another big game with three hits, including a double, to go along with two runs and two RBIs. Christianson also helped carry the offense with two singles and three RBIs.

The Legion team is coming down the stretch here as they try to start playing good baseball heading into the playoffs. Ashby-Brandon-Evansville is scheduled to play at a very good Osakis team’s home park next Monday. They will be at Glenwood on Thursday for a doubleheader.
