The Alexandria fifth grade girls’ basketball team will have a chance to play against some of the top youth teams in Minnesota and surrounding states this July after winning a state tournament earlier this month.

The local team won the fifth grade Pacesetter state tournament at the College of St. Benedict the weekend of June 14. They beat Roseau in the championship game after taking care of Mora and Dover-Eyota in games leading up to the championship.

Alexandria qualified for the state tournament by winning its region in Paynesville in April. They beat New London-Spicer, Litchfield and Big Lake to win regions.

Alexandria will now battle in the Great Eight Tournament at the Target Center in July. The tournament features the top two teams from Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota, all playing for the championship.
