Royce Martin needed to sink a 15-foot putt just to keep his team alive in a playoff on the Marsh par-three sixth hole during the Geneva Member Guest tournament on Saturday afternoon in Alexandria.

Martin connected on the putt, and on the next hole he and partner Nate Meyer shot a bogey to top a double-bogey from Ken Nelson and Dan Saucke to win the tournament hosted by Geneva Golf Club.

It was down to those two teams in the alternate shot elimination round heading into the sixth hole, a par three that plays 186 yards from the tee box. Both teams carded a bogey on their first try, sending them to a playoff on the same hole. Nelson and Saucke rolled in a par in the first playoff, leaving Martin with a putt he estimated at about 20 feet they needed to stay alive.

“I couldn’t leave it short,” Martin said. “It had to go in, or if not then we were done.”

But he sunk it, and in the second playoff they bogeyed to win the Member Guest tournament. The final round was not the first time Martin and Meyer were close to elimination as they needed to win a chip-off two holes earlier to stay alive.

“We had one chip-off, and Royce put it to about three feet on the chip-off,” Meyer said. “So that carried us through that one.”

Heading into the tournament, Martin and Meyer said they were not 100 percent confident they would be the last team standing on the final day. Meyer, a member of the Alexandria Golf Club, even sent his partner Martin an email earlier in the week telling him about struggles with his golf game.

“I sent him an email this week and I said, ‘I am not confident in my game at all right now,’” Meyer said.

“And he wanted a lesson,” recalled Martin. “But apparently it worked out without a lesson.”
