Bluedogs return talent, search for depth

The Brandon-Evansville Bluedogs lost some of their roster with the addition of the Millerville Millers baseball team in the Resorters League, but the Bluedogs return a veteran group that expects to be competitive once again this summer.

The Bluedogs won the West Division title last season with many of the same players who played prominent roles back again for 2014. They were a 16-4 team last summer but ended the season a little earlier than they hoped for after falling in the Region 16C tournament.

Pitchers Collin Modahl and Shawn Krueger are both back this season after logging more than 50 innings for the Bluedogs in 2013. Modahl went 7-0 with a 1.47 ERA and 53 strikeouts last summer, while Krueger was 4-1 with 33 strikeouts and a 2.99 ERA.

The Bluedogs also return plenty of offensive talent. They had six players finish hitting above .300 with Ryan Hendrickson leading the way with a .446 average. He’s back for the 2014 season, along with Chris Shea (.357, 15 RBIs), Nate Meissner (.321, 14 RBIs) and Monte Hinzmann (.320, 16 RBIs).

Brandon-Evansville is scheduled to open up the season this Sunday at 2 p.m. against Long Prairie in Evansville. The Bluedogs’ original season opener was rained out this past Sunday.
