Millerville, Alexandria back in Resorters

The Resorters amateur baseball league has undergone some changes this season with the addition of teams from Alexandria and Millerville.

The Clarissa Flyers also made the decision to fold after last year, so the league now has a total of 11 member teams. Alexandria’s new team will be called the Black Sox and Millerville’s club is named the Millers.

The idea to reintroduce Millerville to the league began when a group of former Bluedogs players came together with a goal to start their own club.

“We got a group of guys from like two or three years who played for Brandon-Evansville, thought about getting a team going,” Millerville manager Dan Schaffer said. “We got a grant from the Twins foundation and matched it, and fixed up the field some and now we’re putting a team in Millerville again.”

Millerville has not been the home of an amateur baseball team for almost 10 years, so the town’s ball field needed some upkeep. With the aid of the Twins Community Fund, the Millers rebuilt the mound, re-fenced the upper field, moved the backstop back 15 feet, removed some grass on the infield and repaired the area behind home plate. The dugouts at the field had been rebuilt a few years ago with the help of local Boy Scouts.

“We did quite a bit of work on it last fall,” Schaffer said about the field.

The Millers have a full roster this season, with 18 to 20 players signed on to participate.

The Millers were granted re-entry to Resorters West after three teams voted yes on the decision and two voted no. The addition of Alexandria to Resorters East was approved earlier this month under a unanimous vote.

With these changes, the Carlos Cougars, Long Prairie Predators, Swanville Swans, Alexandria and Sauk Centre Titans make up Resorters East while the Brandon-Evansville Bluedogs, Ashby A’s, Kensington Norsemen, Osakis Hawks, Urbank-Parkers Prairie Bombers and Millerville make up Resorters West.

The Millers are managed by Schaffer and Tim Christianson, and the Black Sox are managed by Chris Curry.
