Icebreaker cancelled at Viking Speedway

The Central Minnesota Icebreaker, which was supposed to kick off the racing season at the Viking Speedway this weekend, has been cancelled because of the wet and cold conditions that left them unable to get the track ready in time.

The event will not be made up. Opening night with all regular classes and Pure Stocks racing will be May 3.

YMCA Healthy Kids Day

The Alexandria YMCA is holding a Healthy Kids Day on April 25 from 6-8 p.m. in an attempt to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active.

The free community event is part of the YMCA’s national initiative to improve families’ health and well-being. It features games and activities, arts and crafts and open swimming to motivate and teach families how to develop a healthy routine at home.

“One in three U.S. children is obese,” Alexandria Area YMCA Health and Wellness Director Kali Beckman said in a release. “This statistic, coupled with the fact that once summer hits, children will be more idle, demonstrates why it’s important to help families develop healthy habits now. As part of the Y’s commitment to healthy living, through YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day our goal is to improve the health and well-being of kids and inspire habits they can continue into adulthood.”

AABA evaluations

The Alexandria Area Baseball Association (AABA) is holding player evaluations two days next week for those in grades 3-6.

Beetle League evaluations for 3rd and 4th graders will be on April 14 at Jefferson High School. The times will go in alphabetical order with players whose last name begins with letters A through L starting at 5:45 p.m. Players with last names starting M through Z will be at 7:05.

The Minor League evaluations for those in grades 5 and 6 will be on April 15 at JHS. Players with last names starting with A through L will be again be at 5:45 p.m. with letters M through Z beginning at 7:05.

Nordic Trails meeting

The Nordic Trails Golf Course will hold its organizational meeting for the Thursday Night Men’s League on April 17 at 6:30 p.m.

Those who plan to play but cannot attend or anyone with questions should call Scott at (320) 762-5420. New members are welcome.

Atikwa Ladies wine and cheese gathering

The Atikwa Ladies Golf League will hold a free wine and cheese gathering in the L’Homme Dieu/Carlos room at the Arrowwood Resort on April 29 at 4 p.m.

Anyone interested in learning more about the Atikwa Ladies Golf League is welcome to join for a glass of wine and fellowship. Those who plan on coming should RSVP to Bonnie at (320) 763-9092.

Chain of Lakes Triathlon registration

Registrations are coming in fast for the annual Chain of Lakes Triathlon in Alexandria.

The 2014 race is set to take place May 3. All Alexandria area residents are urged to sign up as soon as possible because the event fills to capacity after approximately 200 entries.

Eagles horseshoe meeting

The Eagles Horseshoe Club will hold a meeting for league members and men or women who want to join on Monday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m. upstairs at the Eagles Club in Alexandria.

Adapted bowling fundraiser

The Alexandria adapted bowing team will be raising money to help support the program by bagging groceries at Elden’s on April 18 from 3-6 p.m.

Money will be raised based off of tips from customers. The proceeds go to support the adapted bowling team throughout the season with money for food after competitions for the bowlers, as well as awards and any other costs that arise.

Kyle’s Lakes Area Classic

Registrations are being accepted for the 25th annual Kyle’s Lakes Area Class men’s golf tournament, which will be held on May 31 at the Alexandria Golf Club.

The tournament is $100 per person and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, endless brats on the course and a prime rib buffet after the tournament. The first 80 golfers to sign up will be entered into a raffle to win two rounds of golf with a cart at the Alexandria Golf Club.

Arrowwood men’s league

The Arrowwood men’s league organizational meeting is set for Wednesday, April 16 at 4:30 p.m. at the golf course.

Nordic Trails women’s golf meeting

The Nordic Trails Wednesday Morning women’s golf league has an organization meeting on Wednesday, May 7 at 9 a.m. at in the club house.

Cap Paciotti Memorial Golf Tournament

The Cardinal Athletic Foundation’s Cap Paciotti Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, June 14 at the Alexandria Golf Club.

This year’s honoree is former Jefferson High School health and physical education teacher and varsity basketball and baseball coach Roger Johnson.

A shotgun start will begin at 1 p.m. that day with a dinner and awards presentation to follow at 5. The tournament will feature a four-person handicapped scramble, field events, hole-in-one contests and skins and mulligans available at registration.

The entry fee is $500 for a four-person team. That includes green fees, cart, range balls, field events and dinner. Extra dinner tickets are $25. Proceeds from the fundraiser go to the Cardinal Athletic Foundation, which since its inception has provided more than $125,000 to support Alexandria Cardinals athletics.

United Way golf classic

The United Way’s Golf Classic is scheduled for Monday, June 9 at the Geneva Golf Club.

A shotgun start is scheduled for noon that day with prize drawings and a barbecue following at 5 p.m. Registration is available online at or by calling United Way at (320) 834-7800.

Lake Miltona Golf Club league meetings

The Lake Miltona Golf Club will hold a league meeting for Tuesday and Thursday Men’s leagues in early April with new members encouraged to join.

The Tuesday Men’s Partner League meeting is Tuesday, April 8 at 7 p.m. at the clubhouse. Those who are interested in playing but cannot attend the meeting should contact Gary Miller at (320) 760-3650.

AABA meeting

The Alexandria Area Baseball Association (AABA) will have a parent meeting on Monday, March 31 at the Jefferson High School media center at 7 p.m.

The meeting is for those who are new to the AABA or have questions concerning the league. Registration information can be found at or at the UPS store at 1210 Broadway Street in Alexandria.

Alex fastpitch bingo fundraiser

The Alexandria Girls Fastpitch Association is having a bingo fundraiser on Friday, March 28 at the Broadway Ballroom.

A social with appetizers will begin at 6 p.m. with bingo starting an hour later at 7. Tickets are $50. The price includes two bingo cards, which are good to use for 20 games. A total of $3,000 in prizes will be given away.

Tickets are available at Garden Center Lanes, from any high school softball player and at the door the night of the event. Proceeds raised will be used to support the summer softball league, as well as the high school and middle school softball programs.

AASA soccer registration

The Alexandria Area Soccer Association has summer soccer registration open with an early sign-up deadline of April 1.

The AASA offers summer recreational leagues for U10 (3rd and 4th grade) players and all tournament play for U11 through U19 soccer players.

The U10 boys and girls recreational league will have players participate in practice and play in four one-day jamborees. This league focuses on basic skills and player development.

The U11-U19 boys’ and girls’ teams will participate in three tournaments in addition to team practice.

Registrations are only being accepted online at Teams are filled based on eligibility and order of paid registration. After April 1, only open roster positions will be filled. A late fee will also be assessed after that date.

Peak performance spring junior golf

The Peak Performance Spring Junior Golf Program runs from April 14 through May 21 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:45-5:15 p.m. at the Geneva Golf Club.

The program is designed for golfers in grades 6-8 who are looking to improve their overall game. The focus will be on improving all areas of the golf game as well as physical fitness.
