Arrows fall to 0-2

The Ashby boys’ basketball team dropped its second straight contest to start the season in a 64-53 loss to Barnesville last Tuesday night.

The Arrows fell behind 33-21 at the half and got it within nine points with 1:14 left. That’s as close as they could get as the Trojans held a lead the entire second half on their way to the win.

“Even though we lost, I thought we played a much better game overall from start to finish than we did our first game (a 62-55 loss to Wheaton),” head coach Jeremy Knick said. “Our rebounding was better and the guys kept fighting against a very aggressive Barnesville team.”

The Trojans’ Michael Strand was a little too much in the end. He had a game-high 24 points. That helped Barnesville overcome a nice night from Ashby’s Blake Ohren, who finished with 15 points, nine rebounds, four steals and four assists. Zach Barry added 12 points and Morgan Winger hit double digits with 11 points.

“Strand is one heck of an athlete and it was tough keeping him out of the lane,” Knick said. “He did a great job leading his team tonight. I was proud of our composure. We could have easily folded when we were down 49-30, but we kept clawing and scratching to stay within striking distance. I couldn’t have asked much more from my team.”

The Arrows will try to get their first win this week with two more games. They were at Battle Lake last night, Tuesday, before welcoming in Hillcrest Lutheran Academy on Thursday.
