Nelsen, Amundson earn section honors Longtime cross country coaches Mark Nelsen and Jerry Amundson can add to their long list of accomplishments this season after Nelsen was named the Section 8AA head coach of the year and Amundson was named the 8AA assistant coach of the year.

The duo helped guide the Alexandria boys to an 11th-place team finish at state, while also coaching Bethany and Megan Hasz to first and second-place individual finishes, respectively.

Schlichting named coach of the year Alexandria volleyball coach Becky Schlichting was named the Section 8AAA Coach of the Year after leading her team to the section title match this season.

The Cardinals finished the year 20-9 and with a Central Lakes Conference title after going 14-14 a year ago.

Boys’ basketball lasagna feed The Alexandria boys’ hoops boosters are holding a fundraising lasagna supper with all the fixings on Monday, November 11 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the D. Michael B’s Restaurant.

Money raised at supper will go to help the Cardinal boys’ basketball program.

Wood to speak at FCA Thanksgiving luncheon Alexandria’s Brock Wood is the scheduled speaker at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) annual Thanksgiving luncheon on November 27.

Wood is a former three-sport athlete for Alexandria and a Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor. He paddled the Mississippi River this past summer to help raise money for Hodgkin’s lymphoma research.

More details of the FCA luncheon will be available at a later date.

YMCA Turkey Day 5K The Alexandria Area YMCA is hosting the 3rd annual Turkey Day 5K on Thanksgiving Day, November 28 at the YMCA.

The race is open to both members and non-members. Check-in and registration begins at 6:30 a.m. followed by an 8 a.m. race start. The race begins at the YMCA, continues along the Central Lakes Trail and finishes back at the YMCA.

Participants who register before Monday, November 18 are guaranteed a T-shirt. Early bird registration is $20 and race-day registration is $25. Runners and walkers can register online at or by calling (320) 834-9622.
