Girls basketball: Knights cruise to 17th win

Ella Van Kempen

The West Central Area girls basketball team left little doubt in picking up its 17th win of the season on Monday as the Knights stymied Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in a 54-30 final.

West Central Area jumped out to a 16-4 lead. The Knights slowly built on that advantage in the second half as they secured their fifth win in the last six contests.

"We played together throughout the night as a team," WCA head coach Eric Schoenbauer said. "There were a few times we could have stopped working as a group and tried doing things by ourselves. Instead, we kept working together and made each other better."

Junior forward Ella Van Kempen had a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Brianna Kreft added six points and seven boards on a night when 11 players scored for WCA.

The Knights are down to two games left in the regular season with Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley coming to Barrett on Thursday night at 7:30. West Central Area then goes to Menahga on Feb. 22 in the final game before the playoffs.
