Wrestling: Alex controls Moorhead from start to finish

The Alexandria wrestling team got a win against a Section 8, Class AAA opponent on the road as the Cardinals (5-4) dominated Moorhead (2-10) 49-20 on Thursday.

Ryan Borris continued to pile up wins at 106 pounds as he got Alexandria off to a good start with a pin in the second period. Eighth grader Nicholas Witt then got a forfeit win at 113.

"That happened as senior Adam Kremer wanted a crack at state-ranked Ryan Luthi from Moorhead," Alexandria head coach Tom Ellison said. "Adam wrestled well and had the lead late in the match only to have Luthi gain a reversal and back points with seconds left in the match to steal the win."

AJ Sparr followed with a pin in 36 seconds to get the momentum back for the Cardinals. Tate Runge won by forfeit and Wyatt Snitker dominated a 13-2 match. Trappier Botz won by forfeit to make it a 34-3 match. Tyler Kleindl added an overtime win by a 6-4 final.

Senior Chandler Cole is still unbeaten on the season after a third-period pin at 170 pounds. Deryk Neu added a first-period pin at 220 before junior Jack Roth got a crack at things at the heavyweight position as he fell just short.

"Often, the heavyweight matches end with a pin, so credit should be given to Jack for battling through being on his back early in the match," Ellison said. "Jack was in control of the match in the third period, but couldn't mount enough of a comeback to overcome an early deficit."

The Cardinals will now head to Perham for a tournament this Saturday before going to Cold Spring to face Rocori in the Central Lakes Conference on Jan. 18.
