Boys basketball: Lakers fall just shy of second-ranked Springfield

The Minnewaska boys basketball team gave Class A's second-ranked team the biggest scare of its season so far before Springfield won an 87-85 game on Dec. 29.

The two teams met up at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, where the Tigers (8-0) used their potent offense to secure another win. Springfield averages 93.1 points per game and needed almost every point against the Lakers.

Minnewaska (6-3) shot a blistering 59 percent (31-52) but it still wasn't quite enough. Most of those came from inside the arc, as the Lakers finished 3-of-10 from three and added a 20-of-25 day from the free throw line.

Senior guard Jackson Johnsrud had all three of those triples as he finished with 24 points. Garrett Jensen added 20 points. Matt Gruber had 13 points, five assists and seven rebounds and Grant Jensen finished with 12 points.

Springfield had four players in double figures, as well. Isaac Fink led the way with 22. Decker Scheffler and Mitchell Bueckle each had 17 and Tanner Vogel added 12, all in the second half.
