Cardinal wrestlers look to carry momentum into second half
The Alexandria wrestling team is looking ahead to the new year fresh off of three wins leading into the break after the Cardinals swept their matchups at the St. Cloud Apollo Quad on Dec. 21.
The Cardinals beat Milaca-Faith Christian 45-27 and Ogilvie 51-22, while also knocking off Central Lakes Conference foe St. Cloud Apollo 64-6.
"Being able to come away with three wins is a very good way to start our holiday break," Alexandria head coach Tom Ellison said. "We had a few guys out with illness and that allowed some of our young wrestlers to get some varsity experience. Connor Lay, Kelly Johnson and Isaac Saffert all had a chance to try out the varsity mat. It is fun to see a young team member get a chance to wrestle some varsity action as they get pretty excited but really nervous all at once."
The Cardinals have a long break before heading into the second half of the season. They are off until Jan. 11 when they go to Moorhead to take on the Spuds in a Section 8, Class AAA matchup.
This is a young Alexandria team (5-3) that is looking to build on some of the momentum it gained from the first month of the season.
"Some highlights of our first half of the season include Chandler Cole remaining undefeated with an 11-0 record," Ellison said. "Chandler has won eight of those matches by fall. Ryan Borris leads the team with 19 wins and a 19-2 record. Logan Runge follows with an 11-2 record, Deryk Neu at 10-2, Tyler Kleindl at 7-3. There are several other team members with over nine wins on the season, including Jeris Lemm, Adam Kremer and Joe Brezina."
