Blizzard hockey: Alexandria sweeps the Freeze in La Crosse

The Alexandria Blizzard went on the road for a series in La Crosse and came back with two wins this weekend.

The Blizzard finished off the Freeze with a 3-2 win on Saturday night in overtime after a 3-1 win in the series opener on Friday.

The Freeze outshot Alexandria 44-30 on Saturday, but the Blizzard capitalized when it needed to. Alec Skar got the game winner in overtime when he scored four minutes in off of assists from Logan Sanborn and Ryan Worley.

La Crosse led 1-0 after the first period after a Toon De Schepper goal, but Alexandria's Riley Scanlon and Josiah Roen scored in the second period to make it a 2-1 game. Thomas Magnavite answered for La Crosse with a goal at 13:57. That was enough to send the game to overtime after a scoreless third period.

Alexandria never left any doubt on Friday night as the Blizzard built a 3-0 lead through two periods. Roen and Brenden Payne each scored in the first period, while Ryan Worley added the goal in the second. Ethan Bettis got La Crosse on the board in the third period, but it was too little, too late. Brady Meyers got the win in net for Alexandria with 23 saves.

The two wins moved Alexandria to 10-10 on the season and gave the Blizzard 20 points. That's good for fourth place in the West Division.

Alexandria will now start a four-game homestand with two games this weekend. New Ulm comes to the Runestone Community Center on Dec. 8 before Granite City comes to town on Dec. 9. Both games will start at 7:10 p.m.
