Swimming and Diving: Alex takes fifth in championship meet

Last year, the Alexandria swimming and diving team placed seventh in the Central Lakes Conference Championship Meet. This year, they improved on that ranking and took fifth in the championship meet with 252 points.

"The team put forth a united effort and compiled many, many season best times, unexpected at this time of year before beginning the taper for the section meet at Morris," Cardinals coach Kathy Walker said.

Sauk Rapids-Rice took fourth place with just 12 more points than the Cardinals. St. Cloud Tech came in third, Brainerd took second and Sartell-St. Stephen won the championship meet.

The meet opened with the 200 yard medley relay. All three Alexandria relay teams racing bested their times from 2016. McKenna Horan, Ashtyn Molesworth, Addison Rodel and Jadeya Peterson raced into a fifth place in 2:00.69.

Anna Dokter, Sidney Johnson, Abby Bartosiewski and Staci Nohl took 10th place in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 2:05.16.

Horan finished three seconds faster than her last year time in the 200 yard freestyle event, finishing seventh overall in 2:08.60. Horan had another big finish in the 500 yard freestyle. She placed fourth overall and scored a lifetime best time of 5:43.80.

Hattie Galloway took sixth place in the 200 yard IM event in 2:25.03. Galloway raced 13 second faster than she did in 2016. She took ninth place in the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:16.12. Molesworth finished just ahead of Galloway in eighth place in the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:16.02.

Rodel earned a lifetime best time in the 200 yard IM with a ninth place finish in 2:31.29.

Bartosiewski took ninth place in the 100 yard butterfly, three seconds faster than in 2016 in 1:09.21.

Grace Karrow notched a lifetime best of 5:59.66 in her 10th place finish in the 500 yard freestyle.

The Cardinals finished tenth in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a team of Rodel, Karrow, Bartosiewski and Galloway. Their time was 1:51.34.

The final event of the meet was the 400 yard freestyle relay. Horan, Peterson, Galloway and Molesworth took home a seventh place finish in 3:59.22 to put a cap on the day.

The Cardinals race again in the varsity section meet on Thursday and Saturday, Nov. 9 and 11, at the University of Minnesota Morris.
