Volleyball: Knights extend their season with five-set win
After a seven-win season in 2016, players and coaches from the West Central Area volleyball team set a goal of finishing with a .500 record this fall. The Knights assured themselves of at least that by getting a playoff win on Monday night.
West Central Area, seeded seventh in the Section 6A South Tournament, took care of Ortonville in five sets in the opener to set up a second round matchup with second-seeded Breckenridge.
"This was a great win for us," Knights' head coach Amy Linn said. "We were pretty evenly matched against Ortonville and went point for point with them in the majority of the sets."
The final scores show that. The Trojans (7-13) won the first set 25-21 and the third set 26-24. The Knights (12-10) grabbed 25-20 and 25-15 wins in the second and fourth sets before winning 15-13 in the fifth.
Senior Brianna Kreft had a big all-around match with 15 kills, 18 assists and 29 digs. Fellow senior Demara Bumgardner had a team-high 17 kills and eight blocks, while sophomore Hailey Bennett had 22 assists and junior Morgan Woodle chipped in 25 digs and seven kills.
Breckenridge got a first-round bye after going 19-9 in the regular season. The Cowgirls and Knights never met during the regular season. Their playoff match starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Breckenridge.
