Volleyball: Chargers' season ends at Battle Lake

The Brandon-Evansville volleyball team went to Battle Lake on Monday for the Section 6A-South opener hoping to steal one in a matchup of two closely seeded teams.

The Chargers had beaten the Battlers (13-12) in four sets on Oct. 3 but came into the tournament as the ninth seed. Battle Lake was the eighth seed after winning its last three matches of the regular season. That momentum carried over as the Battlers swept the Chargers to advance to a second-round matchup against top-seeded Underwood.

"Tough match tonight in Battle Lake," Brandon-Evansville head coach Kelly Olson said. "Going forward, we wish them the best of luck in the playoffs. We had two goals as a team tonight. We wanted to have fun as a team and we wanted to make sure we played hard. We did both those things, we just ended up on the short end of the score."

All three matches were tightly contested. Battle Lake took the first set 25-22 and held off the Chargers 25-23 in the second and 27-25 in the third.

"We had our chances, but Battle Lake closed the sets out a bit better," Olson said. "It was as even as a match could be throughout. A play here or there and we might be talking about moving on instead of it being the end of the season."

The Chargers finished with 30 kills as Allie Satterlie led the way with 10 of those. Freshmen Bailey Schaefer and Mikenna Pattrin contributed nine and seven kills, respectively. Junior setter Madison Quinn set them up with 20 assists and Emily Bukkila led the back row with 15 digs.

The Chargers wrapped up their season with a 12-16 overall record. They were 6-4 in the Little Eight Conference, matching Parkers Prairie for third in the LEC.

The loss to Battle Lake means the end of the careers for seniors Allison Sturges, Elizabeth Schiele, Payton Schaefer, Bukkila and Satterlie.

"Our five seniors are leaving the program in good shape and we wish them the best of luck," Olson said.
