Volleyball: Alex, Osakis, Parkers Prairie, WCA host openers with playoffs set

The section volleyball tournaments are set across Minnesota with area teams now knowing what their road through the playoffs might look like.

Here is a breakdown of how things stand for each of those programs.

Section 8, Class 3A

Alexandria is seeded fifth in the section after ending its regular season with a 3-0 sweep of Fergus Falls on Oct. 17.

The Cardinals (14-12) will host 12th-seeded St. Cloud Tech (5-19) at Alexandria Area High School on Wednesday night at 7 in the quarterfinals. Alexandria beat the Tigers in straight sets on Sept. 26.

Willmar is the top seed in the section with a 23-4 record. One of those losses came to Alexandria in five sets on Oct. 5. Sauk Rapids-Rice (22-5) is the second seed and Moorhead (18-9) rounds out the top three.

A win for Alexandria on Wednesday would send the Cardinals to fourth-seeded Bemidji to face the Lumberjacks (14-13) on Friday at 7 p.m. Bemidji beat Alexandria in four sets on Sept. 30.

Section 5, Class A

The Osakis volleyball team will host a home playoff game on Thursday at 7 p.m. after getting the third seed in the Section 5A-South B bracket.

The Silverstreaks (9-17) will welcome in sixth-seeded Browerville-Eagle Valley (5-18) in the opener. Osakis beat the Tigers twice during the regular season, in a 3-1 match on Sept. 12 and 3-0 on Oct. 3.

A win for the Silverstreaks on Thursday would send them to second-seeded Swanville (13-10) on Friday night at 7. Osakis beat the Bulldogs 3-2 on Sept. 14 and lost to them by that same score on Oct. 5.

Royalton (20-6) is the first seed in the 5A-South B field. Upsala (8-17) is fourth and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle (7-19) rounds out the field as the fifth seed in the subsection.

Section 6, Class A

Brandon-Evansville (12-15), West Central Area (11-10), Parkers Prairie (18-10) and Ashby (3-19) all open up the postseason on Monday, Oct. 23 in the opening round of the Section 6A-South Tournament.

Parkers Prairie is seeded sixth and hosts 11th-seeded Hancock (3-16) at 7 p.m. West Central Area is the seventh seed and hosts 10th-seeded Ortonville (7-12). The Chargers got the ninth seed in the subsection and head to eighth-seeded Battle Lake (12-12) at 7, while Ashby is the 12th seed and travels to fifth-seeded Wheaton-Herman-Norcross for the opener.

The 6A-South features six teams with at least 17 wins during the regular season. Underwood is the top seed at 22-6. Breckenridge is seeded second at 19-9. Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley (21-7) is third, Henning (21-7) is fourth and WHN is 17-8 on the season.

All four area teams in this bracket would go on the road for round two of the tournament on Thursday at 7 p.m. if they get a first-round win.

Parkers Prairie would go to Graceville if the Panthers can knock off Hancock. West Central Area would go to Breckenridge. Ashby would travel to Henning and Brandon-Evansville would take on top-seeded Underwood in a second-round matchup.

Section 3, Class AA

The Minnewaska volleyball team got the seventh seed in the Section 3AA-North field after going 4-19 during the regular season.

The Lakers will open up the tournament at second-seeded Paynesville (16-7) at 7 p.m. on Thursday. These two teams did not meet during the regular season.

Morris Area-Chokio-Alberta got the top seed in the subsection after a 22-7 regular season. New London-Spicer (9-17) is the third seed. Montevideo (15-12) is fourth, Litchfield (11-16) is fifth and Eden Valley-Watkins (6-17) rounds out the North field in front of the Lakers as the sixth seed.
