Football: B-E smashes Laporte, 70-14

Coming into the Friday night game in Laporte, the Brandon-Evansville football team knew it couldn’t have a letdown against a 0-6 team.

They didn’t. The Chargers took Laporte 70-14 and were able to give a lot of their younger players field time.

With three minutes left in the fourth quarter, freshman running back Cade Carlson ran 68 yards into the end zone for the last touchdown of the game. Carlson had three of the Chargers’ seven touchdowns with 189 total rushing yards.

“Our older guys came out and wanted to get off to a fast start and they did,” Chargers coach Tim Pattrin said. “Every game we play is the best game of the season.”

The Chargers put 38 points on the board in the first quarter with Taylor Bitzan, Keagan Schiele, Jake Hintermeister, Nick Thorstad and Carlson making 28, five, 63, 14 and 23 yard runs into the end zone, respectively.

“We were able to rotate a lot of younger guys in basically from the end of the first quarter,” Pattrin said. “There wasn’t any let down, even from our second, third and even our fourth group of guys.”

The Chargers younger athletes stepped up and carried the game through to the end.

Sophomores Marshal Riedel and Trent Landowski each had running touchdowns on the night. Riedel ran for 81 yards into the end zone. Landowski had five tackles and two and a half tackles for loss in the game.

“Every day in practice, these younger guys are going against some of the best offense and best defense in the league,” Pattrin said. “Even our freshman coming in were getting in the weight room all summer long. They put in the effort and it showed.”

The Chargers had 363 total offensive yards compared to Laporte’s 140 yards. The Chargers had zero turnovers in the game and the Wildcats had four, three lost fumbles and one interception thrown. B-E had 18 first downs and Laporte had three.

This was the Chargers’ sixth straight win, making their overall record 6-1.

The Chargers might be challenged more next week, when they face the Hancock Owls for the last game of regular season play, Pattrin said.

“Laporte had a couple of big plays on us. Our guys gotta shore some stuff up and make sure we’re not over extending,” Pattrin said. “We need to shore up our pass coverage. We know that Hancock is going to throw the ball around a bunch.”

Hancock is 5-2 coming into their game with B-E. The game is set for Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. in Hancock.
