Football: Chargers look for sixth straight win at Laporte
The Brandon-Evansville football team turned its season around after its lost the season opener to Verndale.
The Chargers haven't lost since, and defense has helped guide this group on a five-game winning streak. The Chargers hold their opponents to the fewest number of points per game in their 10-team district, surrendering just 12.3 on average per contest. Only Verdale, which is undefeated has a stronger record in the Chargers' district.
"The guys put a lot of time in, on and off season, to get stronger and faster," B-E coach Tim Pattrin said. "We also spend a lot of time in team and character building so the guys are very close, and they trust each other."
The Chargers head into their second-to-last game of regular season focused and ready to face the winless Laporte Wildcats with a sixth straight win on the line.
"We've been able to see film on Laporte and they do some things that we need to make sure and prepare for," Pattrin said. "I expect our guys to come out and get off to a fast start."
The Chargers defeated Underwood in their last home game of the year 40-12 last week and are looking to build on that this week.
"We started a little slow last week so that is an area we need to improve on," Pattrin said. "We gave up two big plays last week. We had some blocking mistakes on offense that we have to clean up. We have to continue to play sound defense and not give up any big plays."
Laporte is 0-6 so far but the Chargers aren't expecting anything to be handed to them.
"We never take any game lightly," said Jake Hintermeister after their victory against Underwood.
"Our guys against their nine guys," Tanner Bitzan agreed after the Underwood game. "We just gotta play our Chargers football."
Laporte surrenders an average of 53 points per game and gets an average of six points on the board per game. The Wildcats were shut out by Wheaton-Herman-Norcross last week, 49-0.
"We need to continue to get better than we were last week and play the best game of the year on Friday night," Pattrin said.
