Blizzard hockey: Alex home opener set for this weekend
The Alexandria Blizzard is set to host its home opener this Saturday night at the Runestone Community Center with the local NA3HL team coming off a couple of road losses last weekend.
The Blizzard (2-4) fell 3-1 at Breezy Point on Saturday after dropping a 5-2 game at New Ulm on Friday. The Steel is Alexandria's opponent for the 7:10 p.m. drop of the puck at the RCC on Saturday.
Last weekend's contest with Breezy Point (3-5) was marred with penalties as the North Stars finished 1-of-15 on the power play and the Blizzard was 0-for-11. The North Stars got goals in each period from Dawson Kram, Andrew Heckaman and Austin Langworthy. Alexandria's only goal came late in the first period when Logan Nelson capitalized off an assist from Brett Meister.
Friday's contest against New Ulm (1-0-2-1) was a 2-2 game after two periods. Brenden Payne and Josiah Roen each scored in the second frame for the Blizzard to tie the game up.
New Ulm owned the third period. The Steel outshot the Blizzard 16-9 in the third and scored three goals from Ryan Smith, Alex Nagel and Kirk Coppock.
Kyle Hayden took the loss in goal for Alexandria, despite 36 saves on Friday. Jake Levinski lost in goal against Breezy Point after allowing three goals and stopping 25 shots.
The Blizzard will head to Breezy Point again on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game before returning home to face the Steel on Saturday.
Alexandria currently sits in last place in the five-team West Division with four points in the early going. Granite City is first with 14 points, but just three points separate the second-place Willmar WarHawks from Alexandria in fifth.
