Hockey: Blizzard loses to Granite City, 4-1
The Alexandria Blizzard hockey team was handed a 4-1 loss by the Granite City Lumberjacks on Saturday.
Both teams were shut out in the first period. Alexandria goaltender Brady Meyers saved all 15 of the shots Granite City took on goal in the first period.
Granite City was the first on the board in the second when Owen Sikich scored a goal off of an assist from Braden Altena. Brett Meister responded with a goal for the Blizzard assisted by Brenden Payne and Jack Westlund one minute into the third.
But Granite City hit the goal three more times in the third period, making the final score 4-1.
Logan Neu scored two minutes into the third assisted by Zack DeBoom and Sean Salz. Hunter Schwehr scored for the Lumberjacks 4:36 into the period, assisted by Ryan Pearson and Brandon Baker. The last goal of the game came from Grant Troumbly assisted by Matt Moran.
Meyers saved 25 of the 29 shots taken on goal and the Granite City goaltender David Mulligan saved 23 of the 24 shots on goal.
This loss brings the Blizzards' record to 1-2.
Alexandria heads to the New Ulm Civic Center on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 7:10 p.m. to face New Ulm Steel on the ice.
