Blizzard hockey: Alexandria knocks off Willmar for 24th win

The Alexandria Blizzard are all alone in second place in the West Division with the help of another win on Saturday night.

Alexandria is now four points up on third-place Breezy Point with 48 points. The Blizzard added two points against Willmar on Saturday after a 3-1 win at the Willmar Civic Center in the only game of the weekend for Alexandria.

The Blizzard scored a goal in each period as Josiah Roen put the finishing touches on the win by scoring at 9:53 in the third off an assist from Logan Norman. Brenden Payne scored his 17th goal of the season at 5:20 in the second after an assist from Connor Nilson, and Riley Meyer scored his 18th late in the first from a Steven Gustafson assist. That helped erase what had been a 1-0 lead for Willmar after Kane Toriumi scored almost 11 minutes into the game.

Alexandria outshot the Warhawks 40-31 and got a good night in net from Brey Effertz. He turned aside 30 of 31 shots, while Willmar's Alex Weissenborn took the loss despite 37 saves.

The Blizzard (24-11) remain 10 points back of first-place Granite City as the Lumberjacks sit with a 26-5-4-2 record and 58 points.

Alexandria will be back at it for two home games next week as New Ulm comes to town on Feb. 10 and Granite City is at the Runestone Community Center on Feb. 12.
