Anchors split doubleheader with Willmar

The Alexandria Blue Anchors ended up on the right side of a 12-6 score, defeating the Willmar Stingers at home before the two teams traveled to Willmar where the Stingers won 6-5 in a doubleheader on Wednesday.

Alexandria (11-17 second half) struck first with two runs in the top of the first in game two. Kris Goodman reached on an error to start the inning off. Two batters later Jordan Lee hit a double and switched places with him on second base. Jeremy Hyde then plated Lee on a fielder's choice later in the inning.

The Anchors held the lead until the fifth when Willmar added three to take the lead 4-3. In the eighth, Ricky Sanchez gave the Anchors the lead back on his fifth home run of the year.

The Stingers (18-14 second half) rallied from there as Alexandria gave up the lead in the ninth. Willmar scored two in the inning as Brian Pruett sent his team off as a walk-off winner with an RBI single. 

It was Alexandria that scored late in game one to secure a 12-6 win at Knute Nelson Ballpark. The Blue Anchors used six runs in the eighth to break open a close game. They sent 11 men to the plate that inning. Cam Duzenack had an RBI double. Craig Nennig and Aaron Gretz each added RBI singles as well.

Goodman, Sanchez, Gretz, Duzenack and Jeremy Hyde all had two hits apiece to help lead an Alexandria offense that finished with 13 hits. Graylon Brown got the win on the mound after throwing 1 1/3 innings of relief and allowing no hits, while striking out two.

Notes: The Blue Anchors next game will be Thursday, July 31st on the road against the Eau Claire Express and will take place at 6:35PM.
