Cardinal tennis trio sees seasons end

Alexandria’s Carly Snell, Marissa Wheeler and Rachel Sjostrand saw their season come to an end in the Section 8AA individual tournament this past Saturday.

0 Talk about it

Wheeler and Sjostrand teamed up in the doubles tournament and ran into a dominant duo from St. Cloud Tech. Sam Eisenreich and Leah Wurm dropped just one game in the match on their way to a 6-0, 6-1 win.

“Their Tech opponents were powerful and aggressive and kept us off balance the entire match,” Alexandria head coach Dave Ronning said. “The Tech girls played nearly flawless. We played better late in the second set, but it was too little, too late.”

Snell had stretches where it looked like she might take the match before ultimately falling in three sets. The Alexandria senior led 3-0 in the first set and went on to win that opening set after Monticello’s Alex Revenig came back to tie it 5-5.

Revenig was too much the rest of the way. Snell was up 3-2 again in the second, but her opponent responded by winning straight games on her way to a 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 win.

“Carly fought hard and gave everything she had,” Ronning said. “But the Monticello girl simply had too much experience and composure.”

It was the final matches for all three girls in an Alexandria uniform.

“All three girls are seniors and have had a huge part in the success of our program for the past three seasons,” Ronning said. “They will be missed.”
