Card tennis 1-1 in Detroit Lakes

The Alexandria girls’ tennis team lost a close match to Thief River Falls and rebounded to beat Detroit Lakes in two matches on the road Friday.

The Cardinals lost their first match of the day to Thief River Falls 4-3 but were able to come away with a victory of 7-0 over host Detroit Lakes.

“It wasn’t one of our better days of tennis,” head coach Dave Ronning said. “The girls looked tired and run down and the tough schedule was taking its toll on them.”

In their match against Thief River Falls, the Cardinals lost at second and third doubles when rain delayed the match for nearly two hours. After play resumed, wins at first doubles for Rachel Sjostrand and Marissa Wheeler, second singles for Carly Snell and third singles for Bria Schueler tied the match at 3-3.

The decision came down to first singles, where Ellie Bergstrand held an early lead after she won the first set 6-2. But Thief River Falls’ Karlee Jorgenson was able to pull off a comeback, winning the second set 6-1 and finishing with a (10-5) tiebreak third set victory.

After a disappointing loss, the Cardinals swept Detroit Lakes in the second match of the day.

“I was happy with the way the girls bounced back after the first loss, but DL really wasn’t close to the caliber of a team like TRF,” Ronning said.

The only match that went three sets for the Cardinals was at first singles, where Bergstrand picked up the victory with a third set 10-5 tiebreaker.

The other singles victories came in two sets from Carly Snell, Schueler and Kim Snell.

The Cardinals also finished with two-set victories from Wheeler and Sjostrand at first doubles, Kim Wilkins and Kerri Wilkins at second doubles and Abby Telander and Jenna Steffl at third doubles.

Alexandria was set to finish the season Tuesday with a home match against Brainerd. They will begin section play this Friday, October 4.
