B-E volleyball outlasts Underwood

The Brandon-Evansville volleyball team saved its best for last as the Chargers rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat Little Eight Conference rival Underwood in five sets last Thursday.

The Rockets took sets one and two 25-22 and 25-15 around a 25-19 win by Brandon-Evansville in the second. The Chargers controlled things from there, winning 25-11 in the fourth and 15-11 to put away the match in the fifth.

"This was a great win to be a part of because I think the girls learned a little about how to bounce back and what hustle can do for you," head coach Kelly Olson said. "Without that hustle, we probably do not win this match."

Underwood kept the Chargers off balance early on before Brandon-Evansville adjusted. Caroline Jansen gave her team a big night with 14 kills, while Mariah Hansen had 11 kills, 19 digs and six aces. Diane Campbell added nine kills, while Emma Friedrich finished with eight to go along with 13 digs.

"All 12 players did something of value tonight," Olson said. "Our bench was into the game and it was great to see and hear them. The girls on the floor played very evenly emotionally. Even during set three, which saw Underwood take it to us, I never saw them shut down. I am impressed with their resiliency."

Megan Kokett was all over the court with 32 digs. She got the ball to Kinsley Randt, who played well with 34 assists. Olson also called a kill by Toni Wright one of the biggest of the night when she hit a deep cross from the right side that turned the tide in her team's favor.

"Our decision making is getting better," Olson said. "We still have things that need to be addressed, but the coaching staff is pleased with what we saw from the team tonight."
