Ashby volleyball loses first match to CGB

The Ashby volleyball team came out on the losing end of their season opening match against Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley on Tuesday in Graceville.

The Arrows were close in the first and third set but were unable to win either in a 25-21, 25-12, 25-21 loss.

In her first match as the Arrows' head coach, Andrea Knick saw both positives and areas to work as the season progresses.

"As I look back to my first match as head coach, I am proud of our team for working through the heat and nerves," Knick said. "We had some great serves tonight and great touches at the net, but most of all we had some great passes to set up our hitters."

The Arrows played their best volleyball in the third set on Tuesday, but were unable to close the gap against Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley.

"In the third set we had an all-around better game, and stayed with them throughout, but just couldn't put the ball away enough times to keep our rally going," Knick said. "We got lots of good touches on the ball, and tried to stop their attack, but they just kept on swinging."

The Arrows were given a good idea about what they need to practice in the upcoming weeks. Moving forward they will work on improving their net play and cutting down on errors.

"On our side of the net we had trouble doing the simple things we know how to do, and giving them the ball with our errors," Knick said. "We were also very inconsistent at the net, which hurt us."

Haley Krupke led the Arrows' offense with eight kills, and Paige Nelson also recorded six of her own.

Amber Sundal helped on defense with 10 digs and added 16 assists. Madison Van Santen led the Arrows in assists with 19.

The Arrows' home opener is at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday against Battle Lake.
