PGA pro Scott Dirck of the golf academy at the Geneva Golf Club will host a free seminar on Saturday, August 24 at 9 a.m.

Curry offers fall

baseball instructional

Alexandria native and former San Francisco Giants' draft pick Caleb Curry is offering an instructional league for baseball players in grades 7-12.

The league will run on the five Saturdays from September 7 through October 5. Grades 7-9 will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with grades 10-12 running from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Knute Nelson ballpark.

Former and current professional and collegiate players and coaches are working the league. They will provide an hour of instruction, following by a seven-inning game. Cost is $100 per player.

Evansville sportsmen's


The Evansville Area Sportsmen are hosting their annual fundraising banquet on Saturday, September 14 at the Long Lake Lodge in Brandon.

The banquet will include dinner, prizes and the chance to win a number of different guns. They have room for 150 people and those interested are encouraged to get their tickets early as the cost of dinner tickets increases by $5 each on September 7.

Current cost is $20 each for single dinner tickets. Couples dinner tickets are $35 for two and those 17-and-under get in for $15. Happy hour starts at 5:30 p.m. with dinner being served at 7.

Defensive shooting course

The Alexandria Gun Club will hold an introduction to defensive shooting at its outdoor range on Saturday, August 24.

The course is open to those with a carry permit who wish to improve their skills in the use of a hand-gun for self-defense. It will be led by Kevin Eckhoff, a law enforcement defensive tactics instructor.

There will be two classes from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. Each class is limited to 12 people. All shooters must have a suitable defensive hand gun.

3-on-3 basketball league in Alexandria

Midwest 3-on-3 is hosting 3-on-3 basketball league this fall in Alexandria.

The dates for the second annual Alexandria league are on the Sundays of September 15, 22, 29 and October 6 and 13. They run from 4-9 p.m. and will be played at Discovery Middle School.

Boys and girls in grades 4-12 as of the fall of 2013 can register to play in the tournament. Cost is $55 per player with a $10 online registration fee per team. The Registration deadline is August 25. There will be a $20 late fee for those who sign up after the late registration deadline of September 5.

Harvest Duathlon race

The third annual Harvest Duathlon will take place August 31 at 9 a.m. at Discovery Middle School in Alexandria.

The race consists of a 2.5-mile run, a 13-mile bike ride followed by another 2.3-mile run. There are a maximum of 200 entries for the race. There will also be a kids' duathlon on Friday, August 30 at 6 p.m. for kids ages 2-10.

Fall dance team program

Lakes Area Recreation will hold dance team training for girls in grades 7-12 with no tryouts necessary.

The program will serve as a starting point and training for dancers who are either interested in or part of the winter competitive Cardinal dance team.

Basic jazz and kick techniques as well as endurance and stretching will be part of the practices, which will culminate in a performance at a Cardinal football game this fall.
