Coaches trying to honor past players from Citizens Field

The Alexandria football coaches are going to try to honor some of the history of Citizens Field this fall before they move into their new home once the new school opens up for the 2014 season.

Defensive coordinator Russ Hinrichs is leading the efforts to get at least one player from every class that has ever played at Citizens Field and honor them during halftime of the homecoming game against Willmar on September 28.

"I played back in 1993," Hinrichs said. "That was my team and I didn't play much but I was a part of that team and of course I've been coaching here for 20 years. I just thought it was important. We've had a lot of special events there. We've had a lot of good teams and a lot of big games, and I felt we needed to do what we can do to honor the past before we move into the future."

Hinrichs hopes to find out who the captains were for each team during the Citizens' Field era, which stems back to the 1970s. He is reaching out to former coaches in hopes of making sure that every class is represented in September.

"I'm excited about it," Hinrichs said. "It's a big undertaking, but I want to see what we can do."

Those who have any information that can help in the effort of getting these former players together can call Hinrichs at (320) 808-7243.
