VFW baseball: Alex 16s one win away from state

After a dominant weekend, the Alexandria VFW 16s baseball team was one win away from going to the state tournament.

Wins against Willmar and Benson over the weekend in the district playoffs set up a championship game against Starbuck on Monday in Spicer.

Starting pitcher Danny Kuhn did not allow a runner to reach third base during a 3-0 win against Benson on Sunday to put Alexandria into the district championship against Starbuck.

Kuhn threw seven complete innings against Benson, striking out nine and only giving up four hits.

"He struck out nine so he pitched well," head coach Orin Schueler said. "He got a strikeout when he needed it."

Alexandria's offense was held scoreless for most of the game. Grant Toivonen picked up a double and an RBI in the game, and Spencer Lucas was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

"Their pitcher threw a good game," Schueler said. "Fifteen of our 21 outs were fly balls or line drives, so we were hitting the ball well. But it was right at people all night and they made some really nice plays."

Alexandria used two big innings to blow out Willmar in New London/Spicer last Friday.

Willmar was leading 1-0 as Alexandria came to bat in the bottom of the fourth inning. Alexandria scored five runs in the inning and never looked back.

"The big blow that got it going was Parker Revering hit a long home run to make it 1-1," said Schueler.

After the home run, Brayden Amundson and Cody Weisel reached on back-to-back walks. After an error by the Willmar shortstop, Kaden Anderson doubled to pick up two RBIs.

Alexandria had a big sixth inning as well, scoring six more runs. Lucas and Revering both drove in runs with doubles, and Anderson and Travis Krueger both singled in RBIs.

Pitcher Micah Hedstrom picked up the win in six innings, only allowing one earned run with four hits and a walk.
