Resorters baseball: Brandon-Evansville edges Osakis, routs Ashby to improve to 8-0

The Brandon-Evansville Bluedogs are still perfect this season and they got that way with a walk-off win over Osakis followed by a 17-2 rout of Ashby this past weekend.

The Bluedogs remain the only unbeaten team in the Resorters' West Division after moving to 8-0 overall. They used eight Ashby errors and 13 walks to help them run away with a game on Sunday. That came after Chris Shea gave his team a 3-2 win on Friday with a walk-off single against Osakis.

Nate Meissner and Lee Nelson got that rally started with back-to-back walks in the ninth inning against the Hawks. Billie Juul followed with a bunt as Osakis tried to get the lead runner at third. That resulted in a throwing error that loaded the bases for Shea. He took advantage with the game-winning hit.

Nelson reached base five times and had two of Brandon-Evansville's five hits. He tripled in a run in the first on his way to going 2-for-2. He also walked three times as the Bluedogs used 11 free passes from Osakis.

Collin Modahl went all nine innings for the win. He scattered seven hits and three walks, one intentional, but limited the damage to just one earned run. Modahl struck out eight on the way to his fourth win of the summer. He has a 0.72 ERA in 25 innings of work.

Things came a lot easier in the 17-2 win over Ashby on Sunday. The Bluedogs scored four in the first inning and blew things wide open with a seven-run fourth inning.

Brandon-Evansville did that despite having just one hit in the fourth. The Bluedogs used six walks and three Ashby errors before Ryan Hendrickson got the first hit of the inning, an RBI single that scored Dan Schaffer. Brandon-Evansville added two runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth on six hits.

Adam Johnson had a big day with a double, two walks, two runs scored and three RBIs. Shea added two hits, three runs and two RBIs, while Hendrickson, Brent Meissner and Josh Meissner each added two hits apiece.

Shawn Krueger got the win after going six innings on the mound. The former Alexandria Cardinal scattered seven hits and three walks, while allowing just one earned run. He struck out four before giving way to Johnson, who worked around a walk and a base hit in the seventh without allowing a run.

The Bluedogs will try to reach double digit wins this weekend when they play two more games. They will travel to Urbank on Saturday for an 8 p.m. first pitch against the Bombers before going to Osakis for a 2 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
