Baseball: Errors haunt B-E baseball in loss to Barnesville

The Brandon-Evansville baseball team had its season come to an end after an 8-2 loss to Barnesville in the Section 6A playoffs on Tuesday.

Teams need to play clean defensively at this time of year, and it just didn't happen for the Chargers. They had five errors in the game as Barnesville took advantage of that early with a six-run second inning.

"After playing errorless baseball during the first three games of the tournament, we picked a terrible time to kick the ball around," head coach Brian Perleberg said. "With five errors, along with too many walks and hit batsmen, we felt like we beat ourselves. Barnesville is a good club, and you can't give teams like that extra outs or they will make you pay for it."

The Trojans added single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a lead they never came close to relinquishing. Brandon-Evansville couldn't find the big hit with runners on base to get back into the game.

"Our offense did some good things to put ourselves in a position to score," Perleberg said. "But we left nine runners stranded at second and third base and a total of 11 runners left on base, which is ultimately why we didn't compete the way we felt we could have."

Billie Juul, Craig Campbell and Nolan Bartholomew each had two hits apiece in what was the final game in a Chargers uniform for the three seniors. They are part of a nine-man 2013 class that will have to be replaced in 2014.

"With the end of the season comes the end of the careers of nine hard-working seniors," Perleberg said. "I'd like to thank our seniors for their dedication, contributions and memories they have given to me and our fans over the course of their high school playing days. Their talent and attitudes will surely be missed."

They will leave after helping the Chargers to a winning record this season at 13-9. Their 7-5 mark in the Pheasant Conference tied them for second with three other teams, behind only Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley at 10-2 in league play.
