Section 6A baseball: Brandon-Evansville splits in playoffs

The Brandon-Evansville baseball team almost won after trailing 9-0 before falling 10-9 against Ortonville in the Section 6A playoffs last Thursday night.

The Chargers rallied all the way back to tie things with a five-run fifth and a four-run sixth. Ortonville bounced back, though, getting a couple hits in the top of the seventh to push across what turned out to be the game-winning run.

"Ortonville hitters hit the ball all over the park on us, especially in the early innings," head coach Brian Perleberg said. "We made a pitching change and brought in Brandon Christianson, who threw 3 1/3 innings of excellent relief. Our offense finally got going and staged a was a very exciting and dramatic final three innings of high school baseball."

Christianson not only performed on the mound, but he finished with three RBIs on two doubles at the plate. Craig Campbell added two doubles and an RBI, while Zach Carlson and Mitch Anderson each had two hits as well.

The loss came after the Chargers took care of West Central Area 3-0 in their first game of the day. The Knights had no answer for Tom Bosek, who went all seven innings in picking up the win. He allowed just five hits and struck out five.

"This was a true pitcher's duel and a very fast-paced game," Perleberg said. "Both [Spencer] Illstrup and Bosek threw effectively for their respective teams and neither team's offense staged many threats."

Brandon-Evansville scored all three of its runs in the third inning. The Chargers were helped out by a couple walks, a hit-by-pitch, an executed sacrifice bunt and an RBI ground out.

"For the most part, that was it for offense as both teams' pitchers and defenses played really smooth," Perleberg said.

The Chargers still had a chance to come up through the loser's bracket after the split. They were scheduled to play Barnesville last night, Tuesday, in Fergus Falls. The winner of that game was set to play immediately after that against the winner of Menahga and Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley.

The Section 6A title game will be played on Thursday in Fergus Falls at 4:30 p.m. A game two, if necessary, would be back there again on Friday with a 4 p.m. first pitch.
