Alexandria's doubles team of Brendan Holm and Mathias Burban reached the second round of the Section 8AA-North individual tournament Thursday before falling, ending the season for the Cardinals.

"Brendan and Mathias upset the No. 5 seed in the doubles tournament," said head coach Dave Ronning. "Brendan and Mathias started well and were on top of their games as they downed the opponents from Bemidji in straight sets. It was an enjoyable match to watch as the guys put on a display of good serving, solid net play, pin-point returning and well placed volleys."

In the second round, the doubles team fell to the No. 4 seed in the tournament from Brainerd.

"We felt that if we played solid like we did in the opening round, that we would have a good chance of advancing," said Ronning. "The guys had their chances and had many break point opportunities, but just were unable to capitalize on them.

"We took the early lead in the second set at 2-1, but then lost five straight games and ended up at 3 and 2."

The other Cardinals in the individual tournament all fell in the first round.

"Mark Kallevig played hard as he has all season and played some very nice points, but his opponent from Brainerd was very consistent and made Mark work for everything he got," said the coach.

"Devin Crowe was not feeling the best, but still was determined to give it a good effort, and he did, but was beaten by his opponent from Sartell in straight sets," Ronning said. "Jacob Strand and Levi Duwenhoegger played the other doubles spot and they were defeated in straight sets by a pair from Brainerd. Brainerd started strong and put a lot of pressure on Jacob and Levi by overpowering the net and being very aggressive.

"I believe the guys that were in the individuals learned a lot on this day and will come back better next season. They got a taste of what it is like to play against the best competition the subsection has to offer, and most of them will be back next season."
