Softball: Minnewaska girls blank Benson

A 13-0 shutout of Benson improved Minnewaska's record to 5-1 as Mady Phillips handled both sides of the plate in the win.

Phillips went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, and added a stellar defensive performance as she allowed just one hit in her four innings on the mound.

Minnewaska wasted no time getting on the board after Phillips retired the side in order to open the game.

Phillips led off the first with a single, scoring as Lexi Amundson doubled. The Lakers added three more runs in that inning on single, an error and a double off starting pitcher Kayla Jones, all with two outs.

Benson again went down on a pair of outs sandwiched around a strikeout; in fact, the Braves were set down in order three of their five innings.

Minnewaska added four more runs in the second as Morgan Majerus was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, then scored on Phillips' home run. Helander's walk and Alyssa Enger's fielder's choice set up the final two runs of the inning as they came home on singles by Colleen Rutledge and Sydney Joos.

The Braves switched pitchers in hopes of stopping the bleeding, but Minnewaska made Krista Motzko pay as well, scoring four in the third on three singles and a double combined with an error.

Kacia Kollman was 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and three runs batted in for the Lakers, while Amundson was 2-for-2 with three runs scored.
