Softball: Osakis sweeps West Central Area; falls to 5A champ EVW

The Osakis softball team saw its offense break out in a big way in 19-5 and 15-0 wins over West Central Area on Tuesday night.

The Silverstreaks got a double, a single and five RBIs from Rachelle Rajdl to lead the way in the nightcap. Mackenzie Staloch added two triples and four RBIs in a game where Osakis got nine hits and used three WCA errors to blow things open through the early innings.

"We got off to a fast start and kept putting runners in scoring position the entire game," head coach John Stigman said. "This was another group win, getting contributions from all over the lineup. We were very patient at the plate. You want your hitters to be aggressive but not chase bad pitches, which is hard early in the year, but we did a very good job of it today."

It was a similar story in game one as Osakis scored 15 runs through the first four innings to end things early. Morgan Silbernick was the catalyst, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Brook Waldorf added a two-RBI double, while Rajdl went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

That was plenty of offense for senior pitcher Lauren Silbernick. She scattered three hits and three walks, while striking out four through the five innings of work.

"We played well all around in game one," Stigman said. "Lauren pitched well, our defense was solid and offensively we were patient and timely with our hits. Collectively, we waited for the right pitch and did not chase many bad pitches."

The Osakis softball team got its season going against defending 5A champion Eden Valley-Watkins and fell 8-2 to the Eagles.

The Silverstreaks had four errors on the night that led to five unearned runs. That was too much to overcome for a team that's trying to replace a lot of players, including all-conference pitcher Sabrina Zimmel.

"The biggest difference in this game was between experience and inexperience," head coach John Stigman said. "Eden Valley-Watkins is a very experienced team, returning a majority of their team from last year's state tournament team. Our team is in transition. We have a lot of new faces, which brings with it inexperience. That showed today."

Lauren Silbernick is one of the veterans trying to lead the way for a new wave of varsity players. She got the start and scattered five hits and a walk through four innings. She struck out four and allowed just one earned run before giving way to fellow senior Rachelle Rajdl, who gave up two runs over two innings.

"We didn't do what we needed to do to win," Stigman said. "We made some physical and mental errors, both defensively and offensively that made a close game a not so close game."

Dani Chisholm, Morgan Silbernick and Kaitlin Deel all had two hits to lead the Osakis offense. Mackenzie Staloch added a base hit and an RBI.
