Alexandria softball: Cards sweep Willmar

A lot went right for the Cardinal softball team Tuesday afternoon as Alexandria swept Willmar in Central Lakes Conference play 3-0 and 10-0.

"Despite only getting to Fleet Farm on the first bus after the brakes locked up, the ladies got good pitching and timely hitting," said Cardinal head coach Randy Albers. "Also, Alexandria committed only two errors on the night."

This was the first conference matchup for the Cardinals, who used a two-out double by Emily Kuennen to score Taylor Ellingson, breaking a scoreless tie.

Sarah Bruzken's two-run homer in the fifth added a pair of security runs as she drove in Kayla Dewanz and the Cardinals finished with a 3-0 win.

Taylor Ellingson went the distance for the win, giving up six hits and two walks, striking out 10.

She worked her way out of a jam in the fourth when Willmar loaded the bases with no outs, but a double play took out two runners and Ellingson struck out the next batter to end the rally.

Competing as the home team in game two, the Cardinals put up nine runs in the first inning to take Willmar out of contention early

"Singles by Ellingson, Erin Ann Schueler and a double by Bruzek, along with a couple of Willmar errors, opened up the game," said Albers. "We scored one more time to take a 10-0 advantage."

That margin gave Joycelin Steidl a win in her first varsity start as she pitched five complete innings, allowing just two singles in the shutout.
