Ashby softball team returns 10

The Ashby softball team has 10 letter winners back from a 9-11 team a year ago.

Second-year head coach Kandace Norby will lead that group onto the field this spring as they try to improve on that record. The Arrows lost Jaden Witt and Kellie Anderson from last year, but seniors Emily Elliott (LF/OF) and Meg Roley (C/IF) are set to lead the way this year as senior captains.

"The strength of this team will certainly be its athleticism and its experience they gained last year," Norby said. "Many of these girls were key contributors to the success of that team. One of our challenges will be to replace two excellent leaders in Kellie Anderson and Jaden Witt and Jaden's glove at first base."

A strong group of juniors and sophomores is back in the mix. Amber Sundal (SS/P), Paige Nelson (P/IF), Bailey Funkhouser (IF/OF) and Jeannette Evavold (3B/IF) make up the juniors and Madison VanSanten (OF), Cassandra Jordan (IF/OF), Abbi Ras (P/2B/SS) and Chelsy Ness (IF/OF) are the returning sophomores who lettered a year ago.

Sami Johansen (freshman, C/IF), Sarah Anderson (junior, OF) and Beth Odens (sophomore, IF/OF) are a few newcomers who hope to make a difference as well. Norby sees Brandon-Evansville and Wheaton-Herman-Norcross as the teams to beat in the Pheasant Conference and New York Mills, Pillager, Eagle Valley and Bertha-Hewitt as top contenders for the Section 6A crown.
