Boys' basketball: West Central Area tops Osakis in regular season finale

Osakis battled point-for-point in the first half with West Central Area, trailing by just two at the half, but couldn't keep the Knight offense in check in the second half as the Silverstreak boys fell 60-42.

"[We] fought hard the whole way," said Osakis head coach Matt Hoelscher. "[We] had it to two points at half, [but] we ran out of gas and couldn't get it back under seven."

Kilar Zimmel paced the Silverstreaks with nine points and five rebounds, adding three steals and three deflections in the loss.

Hunter Scherr had six rebounds and two steals, scoring six points and dishing out two assists.

"They made their free throws when they needed to," Hoelscher said of the Knights' 20-26 performance from the line.

The Knights shot 50 percent from the field and hit six of their 14 attempts from three-point range.

They were led by Jay Zimmerman, who had 18 points and six rebounds. He converted 7-for-8 field goals and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

"Jay really stepped up and finished some shots to break this game open," said West Central Area head coach Kraig Hunter. "It was a good team effort and we had a lot of unselfish play to get Jay the ball, as well as some good defensive play from our entire team."

The loss ended Osakis' regular season with a 3-22 record. The Silverstreaks open tournament action tomorrow, Thursday, at top-seeded Melrose in Section 6AA-North play.

West Central Area finished its regular season 13-11 and played Hancock on Monday in the first round of the Section 6A-South tournament.
